A study on ultraluminous X-ray sources under the influence of their host interacting galaxies

The nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) is still a subject of debate. The mechanisms to power an unusual high luminosity of > 10^{39} erg/s for a stellar object could be associated with intermediate-mass black holes, stellar mass black holes or pulsars with super-Eddington accretion, high-mass X-ray binaries or supernova remnants. To shed light on the formation of ULXs, we investigate the X-ray properties of ULX populations in interacting galaxies. Previous studies suggest that interaction of galaxies drives enhanced star formation rate (SFR) and substantial ULXs are discovered at the same time. In this case, galaxies in early to late interacting phases could serve as a favorable laboratory to tackle the connection between ULX and SFR since these galaxies can provide star formation activities of different levels. Moreover, we also account for the influence of bright nuclear sources and check whether the existence of active galactic nuclei can affect the ULX populations. In my study, I will select promising galaxy candidates from literature and perform a statistical study of ULXs based on Chandra X-ray data.
